Chaparral Football came out to their Homecoming game vs. the North Canyon Rattlers looking to send the message that they are a force to be reckoned with. The Rattlers, and every other 5A football program, got that message loud and clear. Chaparral defeated North Canyon by an astounding score of 63-0. The Firebirds were dominant in all three phases of the game. Chaparral controlled the game from start to finish.
Chaparral returned the opening kick 60 yards; deep into Rattlers territory. It took just under 1:00 to score their first touchdown.
Chaparral – 7 NC – 0 11:21 left in the 1st Quarter.
North Canyon’s offense could not get going on their first drive, and a bad snap on the punt attempt put Chaparral in great field position.
It took only a few plays for Chaparral to find the end zone when QB Grayson Barry connected with Marqui Johnson for six.
Chaparral – 14 NC – 0 9:03 left in the 1st Quarter.
On their next possession, once again, the Rattlers’ offense could not penetrate the ‘Birds defense, and were forced to punt.
Chaparral’s offense drove down the field, and Barry connected for his 2nd touchdown pass of the 1st Quarter.

North Canyon gained a few positive yards, yet were forced to punt again. However, the punt grazed off a Chaparral player, and North Canyon recovered inside Chaparral territory.

As the 2nd Quarter began, it looked like North Canyon might get on the scoreboard, but a great defensive stand by the ‘Birds forced a turnover on downs.
The momentum was on Chaparral’s side. They road that momentum when Barry broke a huge run all the way to the Rattler’s 15-yard line. Barry and Marqui Johnson continued their magic when they connected for another score.

Chaparral’s stifling defense forced another North Canyon punt. On the first offensive play, Johnson blew past the Rattlers defense for a 70-yard touchdown run.
Chaparral – 35 NC – 0 4:53 left in the 2nd Quarter.
North Canyon’s 5th possession of the game ended like all others: punt. Punt Returner Nick St. John broke a few tackles and took the ball all the way to the 13-yard line. One play was all Barry needed to find the end zone once again.

As the halftime festivities began, the Chaparral fans, especially the Birdcage, were in a state of elation. The wonderful halftime performances, and class float presentations, only elevated the fans’ excitement.
With the Firebirds leading by 42 points, the 2nd half was played with a running clock. To the surprise of everyone except the Chaparral special team’s unit, the ‘Birds began the 3rd Quarter with a pooch kick which they recovered.
On the 1st possession, Marqui Johnson found the end zone once again to extend the Chaparral lead.

North Canyon’s 1st possession of the 2nd half resulted in their 6th punt in six possessions.
After two false start penalties by Chaparral, QB TJ Elkington broke a 30 yard run, and capped it off with a one yard QB sneak for a touchdown.

North Canyon’s woes continued in the 4th Quarter as they fumbled on the first play. Chaparral’s offense drove down the field and recorded another touchdown.
