5/2/17 Firebird Softball Offense Brings Down Verrado in Playoff WIN 11-9
Chaparral battled through a wild game to earn a huge win vs. Verrado HS on Tuesday night at Verrado to stay in the winner’s bracket of the 5A playoffs. Many girls stepped up in pressure situations in the game.
The birds jumped out in the 1st inning going up 1-0 when Maggie Thurston walked followed by a 2 out triple from Tatum Prechtel scoring Kalyn Baker courtesy running for Maggie.
Verrado fights back in the 2nd inning with a walk, sac bunt, and a single to even up the score at 1-1.
Verrado takes the lead in the 3rd inning scoring 2 to make the score 1-3 with a lead-off triple, an error, and 2 singles.
Chaparral would fight back and take the lead after 4 innings 6-3 with a big offensive inning all happening with 2 outs. Taylor Cannatelli walks, Emma Meyer hits a single up the middle. Kyleigh Ortiz comes through with a single scoring Taylor. Emma advances to 3rd base and Kyleigh advances to 2nd on the throw. Haley Boxwell follows with a triple down the 1st base line driving in both Emma and Kyleigh. Maggie drives in Haley with a hard line drive single to right field that gets by the RF with Maggie ending up at 3rd base. Tatum would finish the scoring in the 4th inning driving in Maggie with a single.
The Vipers from Verrado were not going down without a fight! They score 4 runs in the 5th inning to go up 7-6 after 5 with 3 singles, a fielder’s choice, an error, and a sac fly after it appeared 1 of their batters had been struck out a couple times with questionable calls from the umpire that would have eliminated 3 of the 4 runs.
But our Firebirds were not backing down when Maggie leads off the 5th inning with a single. Kalyn comes in to run for Maggie and is forced out on a fielder’s choice grounder from Tatum at 2nd. With 2 outs Madison Cannatelli crushes a line drive HOME RUN hitting the scoreboard in LF scoring 2 runs. Verrado then scores in the inning to tie the game going into the final inning 8-8.
After 2 outs in the 7th inning the girls get started again. Maddie Myers gets walked, followed by a double from Kyleigh with the girls ending up at 2nd and 3rd base. Haley Boxwell finishes a BIG offensive game with a monstrous HOME RUN to center field scoring 3 runs. Verrado would score 1 more time in the 7th inning but with a runner on 3rd base and the tying run at the plate Maggie fools the batter with a change up to strike out the final batter, ending the game.
Maggie goes the distance in the circle striking out 4 and allowing 10 hits to get the WIN. Haley ends up with 5RBI’s, Tatum and Madison 2 RBI’s and Kyleigh and Maggie 1 each. Haley and Emma both lead the team with 3 hits followed by Kyleigh, Maggie, Tatum and Rachel Boullion with 2 each. Madison gets 1 hit in the game.
