Chaparral once again faced Arcadia with the Titans coming to Chaptown this time, but the Titans stole the win with the Birds losing 8-9 in 7 innings.

In the top of the 1st, Maggie Thurston (Sr.) started on the mound for the Birds striking out Denning for the first out and forcing a ground out for the second. The third batter reached on a single to right field, but a solid defensive play by Allie Van Hoveln (So.) sat 4th batter for the third on a rocket ground ball and an easy toss to first. Starting things hot on offense for the Birds was Mia Rushton (So.) taking the free base with a walk. Rushton then advanced to second on a straight steal, and Haley Boxwell (Jr.) lined a ball to right field right but right at the fielder for our number one. Rushton then stole third and was safe, but an errant throw by the catcher went to the outfield allowing Rushton to score safely with an obstruction call on the catcher. Maggie Thurston hit a hard ground ball to second for the second out, and Lauren Werning (So.) hit a shot to center right at the fielder again for the third out.

In the top of 2nd, the Firebirds led 1-0, but Arcadia got things going on offense taking the lead. Thurston started off the inning striking out Pender and throwing a runner out at third, but the Titans had a 2 out rally scoring 5 runs. A double to the fence by Denning followed by a single by Flynn and another single by Kerr kept the runs coming. Thurston ended the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Callie Honig (Fr.) started once again with a walk. Katie Humburg (So.)then hit a high fly ball to center for the first out, and Sammy Worth (Sr.) hit a deep fly ball to left for the second out. Allie Van Hoveln (So.) then was called out on a check swing for the third out.

In the top of the 3rd, Thurston shut things down striking out all 3 batters looking. Maddie Myers (So.) led off for the Birds hitting a fly ball to left center, but Arcadia’s defense tracked it down for the first out. Mia Rushton (So.) got on base beating out a bunt single down the first base line. Haley Boxwell then crushed a ball to right center hitting the top of the fence, but an unlucky bounce brought the ball back in to the field bringing Boxwell around for a triple and scoring Rushton. Lauren Werning then hit another rocket to center field, but the center fielder tracked it down for the third out.

In the top of the 4th, Maria Serrato hit a single to left field to reach base but was thrown out on a bullet throw from Maddie Myers (So.) in right field on a hit from Denning. Thurston then forced a line out from Flynn and took the third out herself on a ground out back to the pitcher from Kerr. On offense for the Birds, Callie Honig led things off for the Birds hitting a ball down the left field for a double. The Titans then made a pitching change to Jade Ng, who struck out Katie Humburg for the first out. Sammy Worth (Sr.) then hit a hard ground ball to shortstop advancing Honig to third. Allie Van Hoveln then hit a ball through the 5/6 hole, scoring Honig and bringing the Birds within two with the score at 3-5.

In the top of the 5th, Thurston forced a ground out to Honig at shortstop and a fly out to Rushton at second base, followed by a drop third strike toss to first from Boxwell. In the bottom of the 5th, Mia Rushton led things off hitting a shot back to the pitcher causing a bobble. Boxwell then hit a ball right to the shortstop making it an easy toss to throw Rushton out at second. Rushton broke up the play, causing an overthrow on the double play attempt, but Boxwell tried to take second on the play and was thrown out in a run down. Maggie Thurston started the two out rally crushing a pitch to left center for a single. Lauren Werning then hit a soft liner right over the shortstop’s head putting runners on first and second. Callie Honig (Fr.) then stepped up to the plate and donged a ball over the left field fence for a 3 run homerun putting the Birds in the lead 6-5!

In the top of the 6th, Yeeger hit a hard ball through right center and a fall allowed her to advance to third. The Birds’ defense kept strong holding the Titans, but a close call on a slow roller to second baseman Mia Rushton on her toss to first allowed two runs to score for the Titans and put them back in the lead at 6-7. A two strike hit by Pender to left field then added another two to the board for Arcadia. In the bottom of the inning, Allie Van Hoveln led off and took a free base with the walk. Mia Rushton then advanced Van Hoveln on a hard ground ball to first. Maggie Thurston then scored Van Hoveln putting a shot up the middle. Haley Boxwell then hit another single up the middle followed by another single by Lauren Werning, loading the bases for Callie Honig who hit a deep fly ball to center field for the third out.

In the top of the 7th, Thurston once again held the Titans despite the first batter reaching on an error. In the bottom of the 7th, Katie Humburg led things off with a line drive up the middle. The Titans then made a pitching change going back to Richardson, and Humburg quickly advanced to second on a past ball. Allie Van Hoveln then hit a ground ball to the shortstop advancing pinch runner Amber Schweigert (Fr.) to third. Unfortunately, the Birds were unable to push the run across with a two out fly ball to right from Myers ending the game.
